I do not think that it matters too much if we give crisps and chips to young children...as long as it is in modreation and not all the time.
I presume that the saly and fat content are you main concerns
These are some of the reasons that I think this....
You do NOT want foods to become an issue.,once food becomes an issue...it continues!
I think that children should be allowed to eat the same food as adults, allowing them to continually try things and taste different things is all part of development.
I think that most things are ok to eat in moderation... you could always choose the lower fat and salt types of crisps, and make your own chips in the oven as I do. (I leave the skins on the potatoes, chop them into chunky chip shapes and then toss them in a bowl with a very small amount of olive oil and seasoning, before scattering them onto non-stick baking parchment in the oven and baking them...they taste great and have a very low fat content)
If a food becomes a forbidden food, it is easy enough to controll when the child is very young. But as soon as they start going to nursery/school the control has become basicaly lost..forbidden foods get tried at parties and hey presto...they know about themm and want them all the time, making trips to the supermarket unbearable and causing arguments! (They have discovered something different..something that the freinds already know about and they want more. )
As I mentioned I think that is better to have things in moderation... always talk to the child about good and healthy food and offer plenty of good healthy norishing meals in the home
