In Poetics, Greek philosopher Aristotle listed six elements of drama (in order of importance):
Plot - order of events in a narrative
Thought/Theme - central meaning of play
Character - personalities represented within play
Diction/Language/Dialogue - composition and word choice of playwright
Music/Rhythm - originally rhythm of speech, although now may refer to music
Spectacle - visual elements such as scenery, costumes, and lighting
